Summary
-------

This is a blog for ENGR-2050-07 Intro to Engineering Design, Fall 2018, RPI.

Its purpose is to summarize info better than LMS.

Its URL is https://wrf.ecse.rpi.edu/Teaching/ied-f2018/ .

`Syllabus <../../files/syllabus.pdf>`_.

Instructors
-----------

#. W. Randolph Franklin (WRF), frankwr@rpi.edu, x6077.
#. Casey T. Jakubowski (CTJ), jakubc@rpi.edu

Today
-------------

Here are LMS `files <../../files/class01/>`_ useful for today.

`Textbook web site <http://www.ulrich-eppinger.net/>`_ .

#. Attendance: CTJ
#. Student information cards: CTJ
#. Intros: CTJ + WRF- 2 minutes
#. We will then ask students to briefly introduce themselves to a person next to them.
#. Syllabus- WRF- 15 minutes
#. Helium Stick- CTJ 20 minutes
#. The Design Process- WRF-10 minutes

#. Big projects have to be done in teams. You cannot do it all yourself.

#. News story: `Metric mishap caused loss of NASA orbiter
      <http://edition.cnn.com/TECH/space/9909/30/mars.metric.02/>`_.
The point is that, on large projects, little details can
cause disaster. That is the point of this course: to teach
you procedures for managing large projects.

#. My interest, as an RPI professor, is purely selfish. If
you learn this, you have a better chance of getting rich.
Then you'll be better able to buy RPI new performing arts
      centers or whatever.

#. `Engineering Disasters and Learning from Failure
      <http://www.matscieng.sunysb.edu/disaster/>`_ might be
      interesting.

#. Different people have different ways to design; here's one that worked: `Wright Brothers Engineering Method <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvXEmj1SEjY>`_ (4:45).

#. `Page 9 <../../files/class01/p9.pdf>`_ from the text shows how we do it in this course.

#. Mini project teams- CTJ- 20 minutes (10 minutes in teams)

#. Gantt Charts- WRF 20 minutes (10 minutes to work on charts)

#. Keeps track of subprojects - are they on schedule?

   #. `How to Use Gantt Charts <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrtLig0yYrs>`_ .

#. Do a Gantt chart for miniproject.

#. Conducting User Needs analysis- 20 minutes- WRF (10 minutes for students to start)

   #. `Understanding Customer Needs <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C-2v99paQM>`_ .

#. Reminding students about the quizzes- CTJ
